Dr. Andy Winistoerfer is a founding partner and CEO of Carbo-Link. His education includes an MSc. Materials Science (Cranfield University, England), complemented by a PhD in Engineering (EMPA Zurich, Switzerland).
During his studies and further work at EMPA, he gained the technical experience for his later developments of lightweight composite tensile beams. With a broad knowledge and research base in composite systems, he develops advanced engineering solutions, such as carbon tension members, customized carbon tubes, rigging products and crane ropes.
The lightweight composite tension members are used throughout the construction industry, aviation and Formula 1 racing. In 2001, he was member of Alinghi's design team, developing custom rigging components from impregnated carbon and other fibers. Several high-performance racing teams, from the America's Cup to the Volvo Ocean Race to the fastest multihulls world's fastest multihulls, testify to the high quality of his innovative composite yacht rigging and the knowledge he has gained over 20 years of experience. He still actively lectures at the Department of Materials Science at ETH-Zurich. One of his goals is to conduct world-class materials research and produce scientists and engineers who are trained to the highest level.
