Jim Thom

Jim Thom holds an MCA Master 3000GT certificate and has 30 years of experience as a professional yacht captain.

For 9 years he was the captain and manager of the 19 Mtr Class Fife designed 'Mariquita‘. He matched the authenticity of her rebuild by paying homage to the ways in which crew would have raced her and other cutters back in 1911.

Jim aimed to combine the best of traditional seamanship skills with the best of modern team management practice, with a focus on effective communication and the interpersonal skills needed to work together as a high performing team.

After the sale of Mariquita he went on to work as Captain of the 60-metre schooner ‘Atlantic’ and the Andre Hoek schooner ‘Seabiscuit’.

Jim’s completed 4 circumnavigations, 10 years of regatta racing and worked in a number of different disciplines within the industry. 

He tells me that he takes professional pride in establishing cost-effective solutions and delivering the best results for yacht owners. Over the years he’s developed a broad skillset, from the technical and commercial aspects of management to team organisation and successful leadership.
